About
How we work
Applied research, founder education and venture building, run as one cycle.
Falling in love with business problems and transforming industry norms.
Every CBIT service is AI-empowered. See AI at CBIT, including what AI-native means for people and for ventures.
One cycle, three capabilities
Applied Research
Built on research and education
We co-create research with industry and start from the difference it should make. Projects are designed to be fair and inclusive, and to create social and environmental value as well as profit.
Founder Forge
Built on education and knowledge exchange
You learn by doing, using AI, on a real case from your own business: we call it Bring Your Own Case. Our STEAM Founder programme helps you become the leader in the room.
Venture Building
Built on research and knowledge exchange
We turn ideas from the whole cycle into ventures that grow, then bring real problems from industry back into research.
CBIT sits at the centre. In the gaps of the wheel are the three missions every university has: research, education and knowledge exchange. CBIT combines them in pairs into three capabilities, each feeding the next in one cycle.
Where CBIT sits
CBIT brings entrepreneurs, researchers, industry leaders and academics together to help businesses, founders and whole industries transform how they perform, innovate and grow. Its Director is Professor Xiao Ma.
You contract with Nottingham Trent University (NTU). CBIT, the Centre for Business and Industry Transformation, is part of Nottingham Business School at NTU. NTU signs grants, contracts and agreements; CBIT delivers the work. The CBIT Venture Builder is CBIT’s programme for founders.

A lesson from our own work
Professor Xiao Ma’s ride-pooling patent was granted and ready to deploy, yet never reached a market; the competence-mapping platform he licensed reached hundreds of companies. Why one worked and the other did not shapes how CBIT helps ventures find a route to market.
